  Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Why a metal roof?

Not only is a metal roof a beautiful statement that adds value and curb appeal to a home, metal roofs are extremely durable, can seal out water, survive high winds, and are resistant to fire, mildew, insects and rot. Another great feature: metal panels are 100% recyclable at the end of their life as a roof!

  2. Is metal roofing more expensive than asphalt shingles?

While shingles are less expensive upfront you need to consider the long-term value of a metal roof. Metal roofs are built to last a lifetime which means there is no need for replacement. Additionally, insurance companies may offer discounts on homes with metal roofs. Metal roofs may quality for tax credits. Finally, metal roofs are energy-efficient so homeowners will benefit from monthly heating and cooling cost savings.

  3. What are signs that my roof needs to be replaced?

Here are indicators that you may need to consider a roof replacement:

    • Missing or damaged shingles. Are there uneven shingle lines, curled, loose, cracked or torn shingles? Are multiple layers of shingles buckling, warping or rising? Can you see asphalt granules in your gutters or on the ground?
    • Roof valleys showing signs of wear or leaking?
    • Sagging roof. Water can penetrate into the sheathing layers and lead to rot. Look for a soft/spongey feel if on the roof or check for signs of daylight through attic.
    • Flashing. Do you see rusted, missing or bent flashing around your chimneys, vent pipes, valleys or skylights?
    • Age – the average asphalt roof generally lasts about 20 years in ideal conditions.
  4. Can a metal roof be installed over an existing roof?

Yes, but remember that every roof is unique and the correct installation process should be determined by a professional who has inspected your roof.

  5. Are metal roofs energy-efficient?

Metal is one of the most energy-efficient roofing materials available. A metal roof will reflect more solar radiation than an asphalt roof which absorbs and holds heat keeping your home warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. 6. Does a metal roof mean that I will never have to shovel my roof again or worry about ice dams?

A metal roof definitely has its advantages but keep in mind that the pitch of a roof and climate will affect the release of the snow. A metal roof is designed to shed snow (and when it does, you’ll know it – a loud noise and accumulation of snow will result). It is important to recognize that certain valleys and roof angles that happen to be shaded from the warmth of the sun may, however, retain snow. As the temperature of the panels cool down and heat up during winter and spring seasons, melting and refreezing may cause ice to form and snow to remain in those areas as ice dams.

  7. What are snow stops and snow rails?

Snow stops (also known as snow guards or snow gems) are devices used to minimize avalanching from one surface to another. Clear, high-resign plastic or metal color-match snow stops are used most often with screw-down metal roof panels. Snow rails are a tension-mount, clamp system that are for use on standing seam (hidden fastener) roofs. It is important to note that the weight and accumulation of snow can affect the performance of snow guards and snow rails.

  8. Can you install a metal roof in the winter?

A metal roof can easily be installed in the colder months without compromise to quality. Our contractors are residents of the area and are accustomed to working year-round. Remember this roof will be protecting your home so the panels can absolutely handle our ever-changing Northeast weather.

  9. Is a metal roof noisy?

“Metal roofs are noisy” is a common misconception but the reality is that metal roofing is no noisier than any other type of roof when properly installed. Remember that metal panels are placed over a solid substrate. Additionally, the attic and insulation of the home provide a sound barrier.

  10. Is a metal roof heavy?

Metal roofing is actually very lightweight averaging from 50 – 150 pounds per square which is lighter than average architectural shingles.

  Metal Roof Benefits

A traditional roof that costs $15,000 today may easily cost $30,000, or even more when it needs to be replaced.

For that reason, homeowners who choose long term roofs take themselves out of the roofing rat race. They avoid the cost of eventual roof replacement, as well as periodic repair costs. And they save themselves from the future effects of inflation and price escalation by choosing to invest now and avoid additional and higher costs in the future.

Complicated Roofs.

Recent years have seen a return to very complex roof lines on new homes, away from the cookie cutter ranches and split levels of 30 to 40 years ago. While a steep, complex roof can add architectural interest and beauty to a home, the reality is that it is going to be expensive whenever it has to be replaced.

Other Green Benefits.

More homeowners are thinking about the environmental footprint they are leaving behind. Almost all of us separate out our recyclables, and have done so for many years. Now though, we're beginning to realize the importance of closing the recycling loop by buying products made from recycled content. A metal roof is one way to do that. In fact, a classic metal roof on average will use about 50,000 recycled beverage cans.

Home Value.

While homes have begun to increase in value recently, it wasn't that long ago when we saw them decline sharply in value. During that time, homeowners with homes that were maintenance-free and included many upgrades found it easier to sell their homes, and easier to get the price they hoped for. A metal roof is always recognized as an upgrade and its maintenance-free appeal is very attractive to potential buyers, helping to justify a higher value when the home is sold.
